Winning at Divorce Coaching

What is Winning at Divorce Coaching?

Divorce is a global phenomenon. Today more and more cultures are experiencing climbing divorce rates. As divorces rise, more people are seeking out a professional divorce coach to assist them in deciding whether or not divorce is right for them, preparing to confront their spouse, breaking the news to family and friends, formulating an exit strategy, reviewing and organizing a financial plan, accumulating and organizing necessary documentation, easing fears and doubts, and setting goals for the future. In simple terms, a divorce coach helps you plan and prepare for your divorce so that you win. As Zig Ziglar once said, “You were born to win, but to be a winner, you must plan to win, prepare to win, and expect to win.”

According to the American Bar Association, Divorce Coaching is defined as follows:

“Divorce coaching is a flexible, goal-oriented process designed to support, motivate, and guide people going through divorce to help them make the best possible decisions for their future, based on their particular interests, needs, and concerns. Divorce coaches have different professional backgrounds and are selected based on the specific needs of the clients. For example, some divorce coaches are financial planners, mental health professionals, lawyers, or mediators who have experience dealing with divorcing clients.”

Divorce is one of the most difficult and challenging times in a person’s life. Regardless, as to whether the divorce is your idea or not, the process can be very frightening, stressful, and overwhelming. You will receive well intended information from your friends, family, co-workers, and professionals. However, much of the information you receive may be confusing, conflicting, unclear, leaving you with more questions than when you started, such as: Who do I believe? What advice do I take? How do I figure out what to do next? Who should I hire? What is going to happen to me, my children, and my property? How will I support myself? How much is this going to cost? What will I do with the rest of my life? When can I date again? Should I introduce my children to my new “friend”?

Most of the issues you will have to deal with during a divorce are not legal ones. A divorce coach can help you find clarity and understanding regarding the divorce process and help you find answers and make informed decisions. A divorce coach can help you understand the emotional, financial, and legal issues you are facing. A divorce coach can assist you in identifying issues and needs, setting goals, making plans to achieve your goals, implementing the plan, as well as, directing you to the right professionals.

A therapist’s job is to focus on your mental health issues, figure out how you got here, provide a diagnosis, and implement a treatment plan. Your lawyer’s responsibility is to focus on the legal processes and issues, such as identifying and reviewing property, ensuring parenting time and child support, communicating with the court and opposing counsel, preparing for mediation and/or litigation, and making sure your legal rights are protected. Some therapist and lawyers provide their clients with more personal help and advice, but not all.

Overall, a divorce coach is a nonjudgmental partner that helps provide you with emotional support, information, brainstorming, a sounding board, a reality check, clarity, insight, and strategies to help you win at divorce. You don’t have to go through a divorce alone. A divorce coach can help you through this difficult time and help to alleviate some of the fear, uncertainty, anxiety, and self-doubt that accompanies the divorce process. If you are prepared, informed, supported, doing what is right for all, and refusing to lose…then you are Winning at Divorce!!
